advance Setting the ignition timing so that a spark occurs earlier in the engine's cycle for more efficient operation.
air bag A restraint system that inflates a hidden bag (or bags) when a sensor at the front of the car is hit in a collision. view
air cleaner A metal or plastic housing on or near the carburetor or fuel injection intake with a filter to remove larger particles from the air.
alignment An adjustment to keep parts in the correct relative position, such as the alignment of the car's wheels. view
alternator A component that converts mechanical energy into alternating current (AC) that then must be changed into direct current (DC) for use by the car's electrical system view
ammeter An instrument that measures and reports the flow of electric current. view
antifreeze A liquid added to water and used to keep a car's engine cool when running; the antifreeze ingredient keeps the coolant from freezing in cold weather. view
antilock brake system An electronic system that controls hydraulics to evenly distribute a car's braking power to avoid skidding. view
automatic choke A device that reduces airflow into a carburetor when the engine is cold to increase the richness of the fuel/air mixture and help the engine start faster.
automatic transmission A device that automatically selects gears based on the car's weight and speed. view
